MONDAY, WEEK 5: MOVING DAY. We arrived at the store at 9 o’clock and made the final preparations before the U-Haul arrived. The majority of the inventory had been already shipped via the RDC truck in the previous weeks, only the large pieces like the wall decor and large format frames, and a few 16x20s remained. Bets were made on how many trips it would take, a few optimists said one, the rationalists said two, the one pessimist said three. There had been a light rain earlier, but we hit a bit of luck and there was a break in the weather just as the District Manager and the San Jose manager arrived with the U-Haul.
It was a bit haphazard at first with so many people trying to do the same thing at once, but we eventually found a rhythm and things started rolling.
The frames were loaded into hand trucks and carts and taken to the U-Haul. The hardest part was organizing and securing them in the truck. Once the U-Haul was loaded we headed off to the San Jose store.
Three trips later the store was all but empty except for a few fixtures and clearance items. It was to be the last shift the entire team worked together.
